Wouldn't it be nice if the world was a safe place for girls and women?

We think so, too - but the unfortunate reality is that girls and women are frequent targets for acts of violence and hostility. We consistently hear from girls and women who are nervous about riding public transit, or walking alone, and we're here to end the cycle of women living in fear.

However, even if an aggressor is larger and stronger, techniques to survive and get to safety exist and can save your life, or the lives of your loved ones. Civilian Self Defense Academy is committed to teaching self-defense that actually works, with techniques that have been tested against larger opponents with repeatable results. For the first time in our company's history, we are thrilled to bring you Tough Targets Self Defense - developed by an accomplished fighter and Toronto Police officer - our first program specifically designed to train girls and women to protect and defend themslves against violence and aggression.

What is TOUGH TARGETS

Tough Targets is our signature girls and womens' only MMA program, designed to provide girls and women with an introduction to the training they need to go from being an easy target to a tough target, and - with continued training, an attacker's worst nightmare.

Our program is based in mixed martial arts (MMA), with a particular emphasis on techniques from Brazilian jiu- jitsu, boxing and kickboxing. Best of all, Tough Targets is designed by two high-level female martial artists - a competitive and highly decorated fighter, and a Toronto Police officer. Together, they’ve developed a course curriculum based on some of the most common acts of aggression that they’ve seen inflicted upon girls and women.

Each technique that you'll learn has been pressure-tested (practiced in as realistic a way as possible, using maximally safe levels of speed, force and aggression) against larger, stronger opponents. This ensures that Tough Targets will bring you and your loved ones the highest level of realistic, practical training possible. Students will be able to learn in a place of support and empowerment, while feeling safe in a training environment with other females. Spots are limited to maintain a high quality learning environment, so sign up while you can!

Have Questions?

We Have Answers!

Can you really learn to defend yourself in four sessions??

Tough Targets is designed to provide you and your loved ones with an introduction to some fundamental martial arts and self defense skills. However, like any other skill set (e.g. music, an academic subject, a sport), proficiency comes with consistent practice over time. Tough Targets Level 1 will certainly offer you better awareness of preventing danger while introducing you to basic movements and self-defence tools to survive. Participants expecting to become proficient in the area of self defense and escape will require regular training and practice as part of their lifestyles.

Do I need prior martial arts experience to take this workshop?

While prior martial arts experience is definitely helpful, we've designed this workshop to give complete beginners some practical, realistic options for self defense. No experience is necessary, although we always encourage our students to pursue martial arts where possible!

Will I get a workout at this workshop?

Because you'll be learning techniques from the striking arts and Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, you should expect that some parts of each class will be quite vigorous.

I have an injury or disability. Can I take this workshop?

We've designed this workshop to be effective and adaptive so that all participants leave with realistic options for self defense. However, if you're concerned about an injury or disability, please reach out to us at hello@civilianselfdefense.org and we'd be happy to chat. Please also note that the workshop is being held in a basement level gym, where descending and ascending one flight of stairs is necessary.

Is there parking at the gym?

Yes! Paid parking is offered along the Danforth, and in surrounding lots. Free weekend parking is also available on nearby residential sidestreets

I'd like my child to take the workshop, but I can't make it to supervise them

We require that all children under 12 are accompanied by a parent or guardian. We also reserve the right to ask that any kids or teens who disrupt the class exit the gym to preserve a respectful learning environment. In other words, if you think there's a chance that your child will require supervision to remain attentive and respectful, please accompany them to the workshop.

I'd like my son to take the course. Is that an option?

At present, Tough Targets Level 1 is only open to female participants. If you're interested in a mixed gender class, please send us an email to be added to our waitlist for upcoming mixed gender sessions.

What is Brazillian jiu-jitsu?

Brazillian jiu-jitsu, commonly referred to as BJJ, is a martial art that's heavily based in grappling, ground fighting and submission holds. It's one of the few martial arts that allows smaller fighters to gain an advantage against larger attackers, which is why we've chosen to make it a central part of Tough Targets Level 1. If you'd like to learn a little bit more about BJJ, check out this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZenj6WFkHA

What do I need to wear/bring to each class?

Please show up in comfortable, athletic clothing, and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. You will not be training in a gi/kimono, but we ask that you do bring a mouthguard to protect your teeth during training. Shoes and socks must be removed when you're on the mats, and we ask that shoes are removed before you descend the studio stairs. Please also ensure that finger nails and toe nails are cut short before each class. Hand/grip fighting makes long nails very dangerous!
